West Palm Beach County Boxing Club

The West Palm Beach County Boxing Club offers boxing instruction and exercise for all ages. Dues are low, the boxing is clean, and the air is good. We do boxing in an outside ring, so we breathe better. We like to do sparring, and we make sure it's safe and fun.

The Club is located at 137 Canal Street in Canal Point, Florida, 33438. Telephone number is (561)924-3540.

Personnel

The Director, Dan Leonard, has done boxing since high school and decided to further the sport by beginning a boxing club here in West Palm Beach County.

Dues and Responsibilities

Dues are $5.00 per month, or donating some equipment, or donating 4 hours of time in a month. We still have to build the ring and set up a punching bag, and we can always use more equipment. We have good equipment, and maintaining the equipment in top shape provides for fun and safety together. Members are required not to abuse the equipment, by such things as punching trees or walls. That kind of stuff damages good leather, and lessens the safety of boxing gloves.

Members are required to wear mouthpieces wheneever sparring or boxing. This is for safety and is required.

At time of joining, new members are required to sign a release releasing the boxing club from liability for the members' activities and participation.

Members are not required to wear tank tops, as in some amateur bouts, because the weather is warm here, and guys usually do not wear shirts while boxing. Since some guys are just visting the area on vacation, and they like to work on their tans, swimsuits (including speedos) are permitted, and are good for comfort, considering that it is pretty hot to be doing boxing outdoors in the sun, but we like it, and it is good for getting a tan.

Equipment:

  • Boxing gloves: 16 ounces, 14 ounces, 12 ounces, and 8 ounces. Use your choice. Some guys like the 8 ouncers, 'cause it's a lot more efective. Some of us who've done backyard wrestling have thought that regular boxing just wasn't intense enough, and 8 ounce gloves make it, man. So if you've done backyard and thought boxing was too constrained and uptight, check us out. We understand boxing with 8 ounce gloves and to the face.

  • Headgear, if you choose to use such. We've got some pretty good headgear, including some that's open-face, so you don't feel all closed in and is pretty good.

  • A good clean place to box.

  • A boxing ring to box in.

  • A light punching bag for developing speed.

  • South/Central Florida Amateur Boxing Message Board -- This is a good way to find a workout partner, sell equipment, sound off, find some gloves, etc.!
